A big part of my year next year will be the counselling placement I need to complete which I am both looking forward to as well as being slightly nervous about. One of the really unexpected aspect of my Master of Counselling study is how useful it has been to my teaching practice and to the way I am able to build and nuture my teaching relationships with my students.
I can remember someone asking me what counselling had to do with teaching because they couldn't really see what one thing had to do with the other. And it bemused me that it wasn't immediately obvious to my colleague. If you didn't know one of the key aspects of counselling is being able to listen and develop a mutually respectful relationship with your client. Doesn't it sound like these skills could be quite handy to us as teachers? Hmmmm.......I think so.
So anyways....looks like 2016 is going to be an interesting year!
