In my role as kaitiaki in 2014-2015 at Hamilton Girls' High School I was surprised at the lack of middle leadership development. Even more surprising was teachers being appointed to middle leadership positions without prior knowledge and leadership experience. Given this situation I wanted to explore the question "How are middle leaders developed in New Zealand schools". Below is a link to my completed directed study.
I feel like so much of my learning from the MCouns has improved my leadership more than the MEd Leadership. The MCouns delves deeply into discourse, psychology and relational practices which has modified my approach to leading others. I am developing a different understanding about what it takes lead others and work alongside them.
A question I am asking myself at the moment, looking to the future, Is it for a principal or DP to be both a leader and a counsellor?
